Dr SANDEEP HONNEKERI is a consultant cardiac surgeon working as an honorary consultant at multiple major hospitals in Mumbai.
He was born in Mumbai on 15 November 1961. He did his schooling from the Cathedral and John Connon school , Mumbai.
Following this he did his secondary education from Jaihind College and stood third in the merit list for medical admissions in Mumbai. He did his undergraduate MBBS education from Seth G.S. Medical College ,Mumbai. He was awarded the Dr Duarte Monteiro Oration for Physiology in 1980. After graduation he did his surgical residency training at the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai and the Dr. R.N. Cooper Hospital where he garnered phenomenal experience in Emergency and Trauma surgeries. He completed his MS in general surgery from KEM hospital and Mumbai University, in 1988.
Thereafter he commenced his superspeciality training in Cardiac surgery at the KEM Hospital in Mumbai. After completing his residency training from 1988 to 1990 he was appointed as a Lecturer on the KEM faculty. In KEM hospital , he received extensive experience in Mitral valve replacement, Aortic valve replacement and ascending aortic and arch replacement surgeries.
In 1993 , he went to Melbourne and worked at the Monash Medical Centre and the following year at the Alfred Hospital , which was the fourth largest transplant centre in the world at that time. During this time he gained experience in coronary bypass surgery and surgery for aortic dissection as well as heart and lung transplantation. In 1995 and 1996 Dr Honnekeri went to Brussels and trained at the Cliniques Universitaires St Luc where he received extensive experience in Valve Repair surgery for both mitral and aortic valves , as well as total arterial coronary bypass surgery using Lima, Rima from the chest and Gastroepiploic artery from the stomach - for state of the art coronary bypass grafting.
In 1997 he returned to private practice in Mumbai and has worked variously with Breach Candy Hospital , Lilavati Hospital, H.N. Reliance Hospital , Holy Family Hospital and S.R Mehta Hospital over the last two decades.
His main focus of interest is high risk bypass surgeries in octogenarians using arterial grafts only. He also specializes in Mitral and aortic valve repairs, aortic dissections, post infarction VSDs and Redo bypass surgeries. He has been performing Minimal Invasive coronary bypass surgeries using Lima and Rima. He has demonstrated and mentored surgeons abroad - performing live coronary bypass surgeries in Japan and Poland.
